India’s Biennial Transparency Report (BTR)

India will release its first Biennial Transparency Report (BTR) under the Paris Agreement to enhance transparency in climate action.

• The BTR outlines India’s GHG emissions, sector-wise contributions, mitigation steps, and renewable energy progress.
• Earlier, India submitted four Biennial Update Reports (BURs); the latest was in December 2024 (data up to 2020).
• In 2020, India’s Emissions:
  • CO₂: 80.53%, Methane: 13.32%, Nitrous Oxide: 5.13%
  • Sectors: Energy (75.66%), Agriculture (13.72%), Industry (8.06%), Waste (2.56%)
• India’s Per-capita Emissions: It remains under one-third of the global average.
• Net emissions in 2020: 2,437 million tonnes CO₂e (after accounting for land use sinks).
