Wetlands Conservation
Total Area: There are more than 2 lakh wetlands in India covering nearly 4.6 per cent of its geographical area.
Wetlands under Protection: There are total 1225 wetlands under protection. Out of which – 75 are Ramsar sites, 115 are significant wetlands and 1035 other wetlands.
State-wise Distribution of Ramsar Sites: There are total 75 Ramsar sites spanning a total area of 13,26,677 hectares in India.
- As of Aug 2022, the state of Tamil Nadu has the most Ramsar sites in India (14), followed by the state of Uttar Pradesh with 10 sites.
