Fisheries Sector in India
Contribution to GDP: India is the second largest fish producing country in the world accounting for 7.56% of global production and contributing about 1.24% to the country’s Gross Value Added (GVA) and over 7.28% to the agricultural GVA.
Employment: Provides income and employment to more than 28 million people.
Growth Rate: Outstanding double-digit average annual growth of 10.87% (2014-15 to 2019-20) and 14.3% (2019-20 to 2021-22).
Fish Production: The sector recorded fish production of 161.87 lakh tons (provisional) in FY 2021-22.
Export Earning: Export earnings from the Fisheries sector has been Rs. 57,587 crores during 2021-22.
