​Medieval Ports and Forts

  • Sopara, Sanjan, Chaul, Thana and Kalyan were the major ancient ports on the northern Konkan coast. Chemula (modern Chaul) finds reference in the 5th century Kanheri inscriptions.
  • The Chaul port was located on the northern bank of the Kundalika river. According to historical documents, the original name of the Chaul fort was Rajkot.
  • Ports like Vasai, Kalyan, Chaul and Danda Rajpuri were under the control of the Nizamshahi rulers.
  • Similarly, Bagmandala or Bankot, Dabhol, Rajapur, Kharepatan, Shatavali and Banda were under the Adilshah dynasty.
