Nitroplast: A New Entrant to the Organelle Club
- The Endosymbiotic Theory of Symbiogenesis, based on the symbiosis theory of Lynn Margulis, posits that organelles such as mitochondria and chloroplasts originated from once-free-living bacteria that later integrated into eukaryotic cells.
- According to a recent study published in the journal Science and Cell, a new organelle called 'nitroplast' has been discovered that evolved as a symbiotic cyanobacterium within seaweed.
- The discovery of nitroplasts will lead to new applications in agricultural biotechnology, particularly in overcoming nitrogen deficiency in plants.
- Nitroplasts provide a sustainable alternative by enabling plants to independently fix nitrogen, thereby helping to reduce dependence on industrial ammonia production.
- Nitrogen fixation is the process ....
