Minamata Convention
The Minamata Convention on Mercury is a global treaty that aims to protect human health and the environment from mercury and its compounds' harmful effects.
- It was agreed to at the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee's fifth session in Geneva, Switzerland, and went into effect in August 2017.
- One of the major obligations under the Convention is to control the anthropogenic release of mercury throughout its lifespan. The Convention also handles mercury intermediate storage and disposal once it has become a waste, mercury-contaminated places, and health concerns.
