Aquamation
Desmond Tutu, the Nobel Peace Prize recipient, passed away recently (26th December 2021). He was adamant about environmental protection. His body was aquamated, a green alternative to typical cremation processes, in accordance with his commitment for environmental preservation.
Process of Aquamation
- The body of the deceased is immersed in a mixture of water and a strong alkali in a pressurised metal cylinder and heated to around 150 degrees centigrade for a few hours.
- The combination of gentle water flow, temperature, and alkalinity accentuates the breakdown of organic materials. After the process is finished, there is no tissue or DNA left. ....
