Positives

  • Convergence on Many Issues: The opinions of India and NATO on China, terrorism, and Afghanistan, especially Pakistan's role in Afghanistan, were in agreement.
  • Recent Perspective on Non-alignment: India's refusal to join any military alliance at the time of independence was motivated by non-alignment, but circumstances altered between 1989 and 1991 with the conclusion of the Cold War. Numerous neutral and non-aligned nations have formed partnerships with NATO.
  • Deterrence: China and Pakistan would be deterred from attacking India by NATO's collective defence framework.
  • Military-Strategic Advantages: India would get military-strategic advantages from a collaboration with the strongest alliance in the world.
