Tamil yeoman:State Butterfly of Tamil Nadu

  • Tamil Yeoman (Cirrochroathais), a butterfly species endemic to Western Ghats, has been declared as the state butterfly of Tamil Nadu.
  • The name of the butterfly reflects Tamil culture.
  • It is endemic to Western Ghats and its foot hills as well as moist evergreen forests
  • Also, one of the butterflies, i.e. Tamil Lacewing butterfly is very rare and difficult to sight. This is unlike Tamil Yeoman which may be equally rare but can be found in groups in large numbers at a few places. This may have prompted the government to prefer Tamil Yeoman.
