Chandrayaan-2 Mission

  • India’s second lunar mission ‘Chandrayaan 2’ was launched on 22nd July 2019 from Sriharikota (Satish Dhawan Satellite Launch Station) via GSLV MK-III. It aimed at exploring the unexplored south pole of the moon.
  • It consisted of an Orbiter, Lander (Vikram) and Rover (Pragyan).

Stated Scientific Objectives of the mission

  • Mapping of Lunar Surface: Extensive mapping of lunar surface to study variations in lunar surface composition is essential to trace back the origin and evolution of the Moon.
