India’s First ‘Rice ATM’
- Recently, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and the Odisha government launched India’s first round-the-clock grain dispensing machine, or 'Grain ATM,' in the state capital Bhubaneswar.
- With this machine, also known as Annapurti (Hindi for “fulfiller of food”), Odisha becomes the first state to provide access to public distribution system beneficiaries 24 hours a day.
- The machine is designed to streamline the distribution of Public Distribution System (PDS) rice.
- The rice ATM allows ration cardholders to dispense up to 25 kg of rice when they enter their ration card number on a touchscreen display, followed by biometric authentication.
