Disaster Management (Amendment) Bill, 2024
On 1st August, 2024, the government introduced the Disaster Management (Amendment) Bill, 2024 to amend the Disaster Management Act, 2005, aiming to enhance operational efficiency in disaster response.
Salient Features
- The Bill proposes to expand the responsibilities of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), enhancing its role in guiding state governments and central organs in disaster management.
- New authorities will be established in major cities and state capitals to handle urban-level disasters, such as flooding.
- The Bill makes it mandatory for each state to establish and maintain a State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), addressing disparities in state-level disaster response capabilities.
