Lachit Borphukan

Recently, there was a ruckus/controversy when Prime Minister Narendra Modi referred ‘Lachit Borphukan’ as a freedom fighter.

  • He was a commander in the erstwhile Ahom kingdom (Assam) and is considered as cultural idol in Assam.
  • Lachit was appointed as ‘Borphukan’ by King Chakradhwaj Singha. Borphukan is a position embedded with both executive and judicial powers.
  • He died in April 1672, almost two centuries before the Indian freedom movement had begun.
