India Launches First Indigenous Hydrogen Fuel Cell Ferry

On 28th February, 2024, Prime Minister inaugurated India’s first hydrogen fuel cell ferry virtually, a project led by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), set to operate in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.

Special Features of the Vessel

  • The 24-meter-long catamaran ferry, costing Rs 18 crore, accommodates 50 passengers in an air-conditioned area built with fiberglass reinforced plastic, akin to metro train coaches.
  • It utilizes hydrogen fuel stored in cylinders and boasts a 3-kW solar panel, offering zero emissions and noise-free operations.

  • Operating on a 50-kW PEM fuel cell, supplemented by Lithium-Ion Phosphate batteries, the ferry utilizes hydrogen to generate electricity, ....
