Wild Life (Protection) Act (WLPA), 1972

It provides for the protection of wild animals, birds and plants with a view to ensuring the ecological and environmental security of the country.

  • It empowers the State to declare protected areas, under 4 categories- National Parks, Wildlife Sanctuaries, Community Reserves and Conservation Reserves.
  • It created 6 schedules for specially protected plants (1), specially protected animals (4) and vermin species (1), which gave varying degrees of protection to classes of flora and fauna.
