Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC)
Using the temperature variations (thermal gradients) between ocean surface waters and deep ocean waters is a method known as OTEC.
- In tropical areas, the energy from the sun can heat surface water to a significantly higher temperature than deep water.
- The ocean water can be desalinated and power can be generated using this temperature difference.
- OTEC systems power a turbine to generate electricity using a temperature difference of at least 20 degrees Celsius.
- OTEC in India has a theoretical capacity of 180,000 MW, pending the development of technology.
- IIT Madras created the Ocean Wave Energy Converter known as Sindhuja-I. It is made up of an ....
