Inflatable Aerodynamic Decelerator (IAD)
IAD is used to aerodynamically slow down an object falling through the atmosphere.
- IAD offers great potential for a wide range of space applications, including recovering rocket boosters, putting payloads on Mars or Venus, and building habitats for manned space missions.
- The Kevlar fabric used to make IAD is covered in polychloroprene. Kevlar has features like high tensile strength, hardness, thermal stability, etc.
