Direct-Seeded Rice

Direct-Seeded Rice (DSR) is the practise of growing rice using seeds placed directly in the ground as opposed to seedlings transplanted from a nursery.

  • It is sometimes referred to as the broadcasting seed technique and is a water-saving approach for planting paddy.
  • Advantages: It saves labour; sowing can be done in stipulated time frame because of easier and faster planting; early crop maturity by 7-10 days which allows timely planting of subsequent crops; More efficient water use and higher water stress tolerance; and has less methane emission.
  • Disadvantages: Uses more seed than transplanting; lesser land levelling costs Rs. 1,000/acre is compulsory in DSR. ....
