National Level Efforts towards Disaster Management

Disaster Management Act 2005

  • Came into force in January 2006, Disaster Management Act (DMA) is a national law that empowers the Central government to declare the entire country or part of it as affected by a disaster and to make plans for mitigation to reduce “risks, impacts and effects” of the disaster.
  • The stated object and purpose of the DM Act is to manage disasters, including preparation of mitigation strategies, capacity-building and more.

Salient Features

The following governing bodies have been established by DMA 2005-

a) National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA)
