INS Vagir Commissioned into Indian Navy
On 23rd January, 2023, the fifth Scorpene class conventional submarine, INS Vagir, was commissioned into the Indian Navy.
INS Vagir: Key Points
- About: INS Vagir, a Kalvari-class submarine, gets its name from the erstwhile Vagir, a submarine which served the Navy between 1973 and 2001. It will form part of the Western Naval Command’s submarine fleet.
- INS Vagir takes its name from the sand shark, a deep-sea predator endemic to the Indian Ocean.
- Design & Development: The submarine has been built indigenously by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) and designed by French naval defence company Naval Group (formerly known as DCNS) ....
