- India’s transport network is one of the most extensive in the world. The share of the transport sector in overall infrastructure investments has increased from 2 per cent of GDP during 1995-99 to an average of 2.6 percent of GDP between 2007 and 2011.
- At the same time, accessibility and connectivity are limited. Only 20 percent of the national highway network (which carries 40 percent of traffic) is four-lane, and one-third of the rural population lacks access to an all-weather road.
