Sustainable Hydrogel for Microplastic Removal
Recently, researchers at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) designed a sustainable hydrogel to remove microplastics from water in an effort to address health risks and environmental dangers associated with microplastics.
- Traditional methods like filtering membranes often prove unsustainable due to clogging, leading the IISc team to develop a 3D hydrogel.
- The hydrogel comprises three polymer layers - chitosan, polyvinyl alcohol, and polyaniline - intertwined to form an interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) architecture.
- Nanoclusters of copper substitute polyoxometalate (Cu-POM) infused within the matrix act as catalysts, degrading microplastics under UV light irradiation.
