- Tuberculosis (TB) is the 10th leading cause of death worldwide, and since 2011 it has been the leading cause of death from a single infectious agent, ranking above HIV/AIDS.
- Overall, TB deaths have decreased over the past year. However, under-reporting and under-diagnosis of TB cases remains a major challenge.
- India accounted for 27% of the total new infections of TB in 2017, which is the highest among the top 30 high TB burden countries in the world.
- India also led in cases of Multi-Drug Resistant TB (MDR-TB). Nearly a quarter of the world’s MDR-TB cases are in India (24 per cent).
