​‘Opportunity Rover’ Mission

  • The Opportunity rover mission of NASA has been recently declared as complete.The robot has been missing since NASA lost contact with the rover when a severe Martian dust storm blanketed the rover’s location in June 2018.
  • It operated for 14 years on the surface of Mars and achieved many breakthroughs in Martian exploration:
    • Discovered strong indications at Endeavour Crater of the action of ancient water similar to the drinkable water of a pond or lake on Earth. It confirmed that water once flowed on the red planet.
    • Found hematite, a mineral that forms in water, at its landing site.
