​Neelakurinji Plants

  • Tamil Nadu government has announced a novel scheme for the protection of the exotic Neela kurinji (Strobilanthus kunthianus) plants that flower only once in 12 years.
  • Neelakurinji is a shrub that used to grow abundantly in the Shola grasslands of the Western Ghats.
  • The flower is special to the Western Ghats, especially the Nilgiris, and has a 12-year flowering cycle. The last major bloom was in 2006.
  • The Nilgiri Hills, which literally means the Blue Mountains is said to derive its name from the purplish blue flowers.
