​Dead Zone

  • Scientists have predicted the dead zone, or area with little to no oxygen in the northern Gulf of Mexico, will become larger than the state of Connecticut by the end of July
  • While there are more than 500 dead zones around the world, the northern Gulf of Mexico dead zone is the second largest human-caused coastal hypoxic (low-oxygen)area in the world.
  • Dead zones are hypoxic areas in the world’s oceans and large lakes, caused by “excessive nutrient pollution” from human activities coupled with other factors that deplete the oxygen required to support most marine life in bottom and near-bottom water.
