From 1-4 April, 2022, India’s President paid a State visit to Turkmenistan. This was the first-ever Presidential visit from India to independent Turkmenistan.
Background
- Archaeological finds in south Turkmenistan have revealed contacts with Indus Valley Civilization.
- ‘Turkman Gate’ was built in Delhi in memory of great Turkmen Saint Shams-ul-Arifeen Shah Turkmen Bayabani, who is believed to have lived in India during 13th Century.
- The formal diplomatic relationship started in 1994 with the establishment of Indian embassy in Ashgabat.

- Education: India provides training for Turkmen nationals under its ITEC (India technical and Economic Cooperation) programme.
