National Coal Gasification Mission

Coal gasification is the process of converting coal into synthesis gas (also called syngas), which is a mixture of hydrogen (H2), carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2). The syngas technology allows conversion of non-mineable coal/lignite into combustible gases through in situ gasification of the material.

Need

  • Environment-friendly: When compared to coal burning, coal gasification is a cleaner solution. The decision will assist the country in meeting its Paris Agreement commitments under the CoP-21.
  • Multiple Applications: Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG), energy fuel (methanol and ethanol), ammonia for fertilisers, and petro-chemicals can all be made from Syn-Gas produced from coal gasification.
