- Caste-based Census is the enumeration of people or households based on Caste identity to identify the actual demographic composition of different castes and their share of national assets. It was started in India during the British period and continued till 1931. In 1951, as a conscious policy decision, the caste-wise enumeration- other than Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes- was given up.
