Committees and Commission

After the Indian independence, there were various committees that tried to give a proper structure to the panchayati raj in India. These are –

  • Balwant Rai Mehta Committee, 1957: This committee mainly advocated for the basic level of administration to be at the Block level. It suggested establishment of a 3-tier Panchayati Raj system - Gram Panchayat at the village level, Panchayat Samiti at the block level, and Zilla Parishad at the district level. These tiers should be organically linked through a device of indirect elections.
  • K. Santhanam Committee, 1963: The committee advocated that the Panchayati Raj Institutions ....
