Nitrogen Cycle

Nitrogen is an element that is found in both the living portion of our planet and the inorganic parts of the Earth system.

  • All plants and animals need nitrogen to make amino acids, proteins and DNA. Nitrogen is a limiting factor for plant growth.
  • Approximately 80% of the molecules in Earth’s atmosphere are made of nitrogen (N2) however it not usable until it is broken down.
  • Atmospheric nitrogen is converted into the usable form ammonia through the process of Nitrogen fixation by symbiotic bacteria (Azotobacter and Rhizobium) known as Diazotrophs.
