Cellular-Level Map of Growing Foetal Brains
In December 2024, researchers at IIT Madras announced that they have developed a groundbreaking dataset — a 3D map of foetal brains at cellular resolution. This map, created from the brains of stillborn babies, offers new insights into brain development and neurological diseases.
How the Dataset Was Created
- The brains of five stillborn babies in the second trimester were sourced from partner hospitals. These brains were frozen to minimize tissue damage and preserve their structure.
- Thin cross-sections of the brains, sliced to 10-20 microns, were stained and imaged at high resolution (1-0.5 microns), capturing every detail of the brain.
- The dataset, called ....
