Ocean Acidification: Causes & Effects
Causes of Ocean Acidification
- Carbon Dioxide rise in Oceans: Elevated carbon dioxide levels in the ocean significantly affect its composition. As sea organisms perish, their remains accumulate and form corals, which contain carbon. These organisms also release calcium, compounding the water's acidity.
- Atmospheric Influence on Water: Human-induced carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere can detrimentally impact the oceans. Carbon gases dissolve in seawater, reducing its pH and contributing to increased acidification due to this atmospheric contamination.
- Hydrogen Ions and Water Quality: Chemical reactions at the ocean floor may elevate hydrogen ions, reacting with compounds like nitrogen and water, contributing to increased ....
