Status of Women

In the Harappan civilization, women were initially getting more respect and high status compared to the other different societies. Historical sculptures discovered from the Indus valley civilization highlighted the significant role played by women during the ancient period. Women were not considered as property. Bull riding was one of the primary transportation means in Gangetic valley, performed by women.

  • In the Vedic period, women in society enjoyed respectable positions. They were allowed to take part in Sabhas and Samitis. There were women poets too (Apala, Lopamudra, Viswavara and Ghosa).
