Precursor Events till the formation of Congress

Government of India Act, 1858

  • After the 1857 Revolt, the responsibility of ruling India was directly assumed by the British Crown.
  • A minister of British government, called the secretary of state, was made responsible for the government of India.
  • Governor-General of India was replaced by the Viceroy of India and Lord Canning became the first Viceroy of India in 1858.

Vernacular Press Act 1878

  • This Act empowered a Magistrate to secure an undertaking from the editor, publisher and printer of a vernacular newspaper that nothing would be published against the English Government.
