Role of Forts in Indian History
- The term 'fort' is usually understood to mean a strong defensive building or walled or fenced place. It is protected by a ditch or front lines of bastioned walls or by warriors.
- The first archaeological evidence in India has been found from the sites of the proto-historic Harappan culture, which date between about 3000 and 1500 BC.
- Burned and unbaked bricks were used in the construction of all the major Harappan sites. Major sites were surrounded by protective walls.
- According to Megasthenes, the Greek ambassador of Seleucus Nicator, in 321 BC, Chandragupta Maurya's capital Pataliputra was protected by a ditch with wooden walls.
