New Snake Eel Species Discovered in Odisha
In May 2024, scientists at the Zoological Survey of India's (ZSI) Regional Centre in Gopalpur, Odisha, identified a new species of snake eel from various estuarine environments across the state.
- At least six specimens of the newly discovered snake eel, named 'Ophichthus suryai', were collected from different rivers in Odisha last year.
- The discovery was confirmed after comprehensive studies and DNA testing conducted at ZSI's laboratory in Gopalpur.
- The researchers distinguished the new species based on distinct dorsal fin origin, vertebral count, and teeth patterns.
- The species is differentiated from similar congeners like Ophichthus alleni, Ophichthus zophistius, and Ophichthus altipennis.
