NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) Mission: Objectives & Significance
NISAR is a joint mission between NASA and ISRO, aimed at studying Earth's dynamic processes using advanced radar imaging. It will enhance understanding of natural hazards, ecosystem changes, and climate impacts globally.
About NISAR Mission
- Organizations Involved: Joint operation between NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) and ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation)
- Orbit: Sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of 747 km (approximately 464 miles)
- Instruments
- L-Band SAR (provided by NASA): Penetrates through vegetation and dry snow, ideal for measuring soil moisture, forest biomass, and ice dynamics.
- S-Band SAR (provided by ISRO): Complements L-band data, particularly useful for monitoring agricultural crops, forests, and urban areas.
