Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal as Potential CO2 Sinks
- Researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) have identified the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal as potential storage sinks for storing large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2).
- The process, called 'CO2 sequestration', envisages the ocean acting as a storage reservoir for the greenhouse gas, helping decarbonise industrial clusters.
- The researchers found that liquid CO2 can be permanently stored as solid hydrates at depths of over 500 metres in the ocean.
- Doing so can help harness the full potential of the oceans in building a decarbonised world without harming marine ecosystems.
