India’s Care Economy
Challenges
- Marginalization: The importance of care work has historically not received much attention. There is no structure in place in India for the correct identification of care economy employees, and when compared to other nations, India's state spending on the care economy is incredibly low (less than 1% of GDP).
- Unpaid Care is Disproportionately Burdened on Women: Women handle a much bigger proportion of household chores than do males. Housewife pay are being proposed as a solution to this disparity, however this action could backfire by further entrenching gender roles in caregiving.
