Child Marriage in India
Rationale/Causes
- Cultural: The practise of child marriage in northern India is intimately related to holy holidays like Akha Teej in Rajasthan, when numerous districts hold mass child weddings. However, administration struggles to put an end to these marriages because of social pressure.
- Poverty: In low-income areas, marrying off a daughter means taking care of one less mouth to feed while also frequently receiving a much-appreciated dowry from the bride's family. The dowry given by the bride's family may be less if she is young in cultures where the groom's family is compensated instead.
