About the Discovery

  • Clue of the existence of the HCV: In the 1970s, Dr. Harvey Alter led a team of scientists in discovering that most cases of post-transfusion hepatitis couldn’t be linked to Type A or B viruses. This discovery provided a hint to the existence of a pathogen that had not yet been described.
