Irrigation Bottlenecks
- Over Reliance on Monsoon: 65% of the net sown area constitutes rain-fed crop demonstrating the over-reliance on monsoon for crops. Weak monsoon results in crop failure thereby affecting the economy in a negative manner.
- Water Wastage: India’s biggest problem is that of rampant water-waste in agriculture that consumes around 78% of India’s total freshwater resources. The current method of flood-irrigation results in about 35% loss of water. An astonishing 60% of the water diverted or pumped for irrigation is wasted via runoff into waterways, evapotranspiration, percolation and seepage.
