Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act of 1974 and Amendment, 1988

The fundamental goal of this act is to prevent and regulate water contamination, as well as to maintain or restore the wholesomeness and purity of water (in the streams or wells or on land).

  • The Act gives State Pollution Control Boards (SPCBs) regulatory authority and empowers them to set and enforce effluent standards for factories that discharge pollutants into bodies of water.
  • A Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) performs the same functions for Union Territories and formulates policies and coordinates the activities of different State Boards.
