Recently, first-ever global level study was conducted to index causes and effects of decline in ecosystem services provided by pollinator species.
Key Findings
- Habitat destruction, land management — notably grazing, fertilisers, and agricultural monoculture farming — and extensive pesticide use are the top three global causes of pollinator loss.
- Crop pollination deficits pose the greatest threat to humans, resulting in a decrease in the quality and quantity of food and biofuel crops.
- According to the study, China and India, which are heavily reliant on pollinator-dependent fruit and vegetable crops, now require people to hand-pollinate some fruits and vegetables.
