Illegal Sand Mining

Sand mining near river bridges was recently prohibited by the Bihar government. This was done to prevent unlawful sand mining from endangering river crossings. Mining not only diverts water, but it also jeopardises bridge foundations.

About Illegal Sand Mining

  • Sand is a minor mineral under Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) (MMDR) Act, 1957; therefore sand mining is regulated by respective state governments.

Causes of illegal Sand Mining

  • Supply-Demand Mismatch: Since 2000, India's annual use of building sand has tripled, causing sand prices to rise by 150-200 percent in two years, creating ideal conditions for the sand mafia to thrive.
