Basel Convention

The Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements and Disposal of Hazardous Wastes was approved in 1989 and entered into force in 1992. The Convention's goal is to safeguard human health and the environment from the harmful impacts of hazardous wastes.

  • Its application area includes a wide variety of wastes classified as "hazardous wastes" based on their origin, composition, and characteristics, as well as two categories of wastes classified as "other wastes": household garbage and incinerator ash.
  • The guiding principle of the Convention are that transboundary movements of hazardous wastes should be:
    • Reduced to a minimum
    • Minimized at the source
