Recently Chief Justice of India while heading a Constitution Bench reviewing challenges against the amendments in Finance Act 2017 suggested having as few tribunals as possible because the numerous tribunals, once meant to lighten the burden of high courts across the country, have now become virtually non-functional, crippled by a chronic lack of infrastructure, manpower and an irregular appointment mechanism.

  • A tribunal is a quasi-judicial statutory body established by an Act of Parliament or State Legislature under Article 323A (Administrative Tribunal) or 323B (Tribunals for other matters) to resolve disputes that are brought before it.
