Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Act, 2019
President of India gave assent to a bill which seeks to increase the number of Supreme Court judges from the present 30 to 34, including the Chief Justice of India with a view to reducing pendency of cases.
- The 2019 act amends the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956 to give effect to the change. It was last amended in 2009 to increase the judges’ strength from 25 to 30 (excluding the CJI).
- The paucity of judges makes it difficult for the Chief Justice of India to constitute enough Constitution Benches to decide important questions of law.
