Hindi as Language of Unity
Home Minister recently said that the country should come together to promote Hindi. However, on ‘Hindi Diwas’, he added that this should not be done at the cost of other languages.
- Hindi Divas is observed to mark the decision of the Constituent Assembly on September 14, 1949 to extend official language status to Hindi. It was first observed in 1953.
- The Eighth Schedule of the constitution lists the official languages of India and consists of 22 languages: (1) Assamese, (2) Bengali, (3) Gujarati, (4) Hindi, (5) Kannada, (6) Kashmiri, (7) Konkani, (8) Malayalam, (9) Manipuri, (10) Marathi, (11) Nepali, (12) Oriya, (13) ....
